Taipei. Tensions between China and Taiwan have escalated since US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taipei last month. Tensions also remain over China’s claims to the self-governing island. Meanwhile, a US Congressional delegation has also reached Taiwan on Wednesday. China has intensified military exercises against Taiwan since Pelosi’s visit in early August. China is sending warships, warplanes and even drones to Taiwan on a daily basis.

According to the AP, after Pelosi’s visit, a US congressional delegation has arrived here to meet Taiwanese officials. An eight-member bipartisan delegation is scheduled to meet Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen on Thursday. The delegation is led by Democrat Stephanie Murphy. Murphy is among lawmakers who have introduced a bill in the US Congress that would allow the US to lend arms to support Taiwan. This is similar to the bill that was passed to arm Ukraine.

The delegation includes Hawaii’s Democrat Kaylee Kahle and Republican Scott Franklin of Florida, Joe Wilson of South Carolina, Andy Barr of Kentucky, Darrell Issa of California, Claudia Tenney of New York and Kate Camick of Florida. Notably, Pelosi was the highest level member of the US government to visit Taiwan in 25 years. China conducted extensive military exercises, including firing missiles and sending ships across the Taiwan Strait. The Taiwan Strait has long been a buffer zone between the two sides.

It is known that China views foreign diplomats visiting Taiwan as interference in its affairs and against Taiwan’s sovereignty. China’s recent military drills are seen by some as a rehearsal for future military action against Taiwan.
