7 Biggest Web Series and TV Shows in October on Netflix, Hotstar, Apple TV+ and Prime Video

Which is the biggest new TV series in October 2022? After two months that gave us two big-budget epic fantasies — Game of Thrones prequel spin-off House of the Dragon in August, and The Lord of the Rings prequel spin-off The Rings of Power in September — October is downright quiet. There isn’t a single title that can hold a candle to the two of them, both set to complete their first season this month. That said, there’s a lot of variety on offer in October, whether it’s Irish comedy, American horrors, VR-driven sci-fi, Bombay-set drama, and Sicilian-set Rich People satire.

dairy girls season 3

When: 7 October
Where: Netflix

The girls — Erin (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), Orla (Louisa Harland), Claire (Nicola Coughlan), and Michelle (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell) — and “I’m a Dairy Girl” James (Dylan Llewellyn) are eagerly third. And waiting for the results of their GCSE exams at the beginning of the final session. (GCSE is equivalent to class 11 in India.)

The Derry Girls Season 3 trailer promises to show Sister George Michael (Siobhan McSweeney) in a DMC DeLorean like he’s out of Back to the Future. And we’ll actually get a bit of the future — the 45-minute flashforward special, which aired after the season finale, will take us back to the days of the Good Friday Agreement between the British and Irish governments.

Delayed by a few years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dairy Girls Season 3 premiered on Channel 4 in the UK in mid-April. It took about six months for it to arrive on Netflix worldwide. All seven Derry Girls Season 3 episodes will be available for binge watching simultaneously.

The Midnight Club

When: 7 October
Where: Netflix

Mike Flanagan returns this spooky season with an adaptation of Christopher Pike’s novel, The Midnight Club. Adia (Iman Benson) is the newest addition to Brightcliff Hospice, a come-together home for mentally ill teens during their final moments of life. Headed by the mystic Dr. Georgina Stanton (Heather Langenkamp), there seems to be a creepy vibe about the place, especially in the basement.

At midnight, seven children, including Aida, come together to tell horror stories – similar to Nickelodeon’s Are You Affair of the Dark. Only, more seriously toned. One night, they make a pact, where the first to succumb to their illness is to communicate with the survivors from beyond the grave. After one of them dies, a bizarre set of circumstances unfolds, leaving every waking hour filled with stress and illness.

It’s also quite refreshing to see Flanagan incorporate some jump scares into her work, in line with the thematically immature and predictable stories these kids tell every night. Like most Netflix entries, all 10 episodes of The Midnight Club will be available for streaming on day one.

mismatch season 2

When: October 14
Where: Netflix

Things end badly between Dimple Ahuja (Prajakta Koli) and Rishi Singh Shekhawat (Rohit Saraf) at the end of the first season – and at the beginning of the second, the two ex-lovers find solace in other people’s arms. Dimple is getting closer to Harsh (Vihaan Samat), while Rishi falls in love with photographer Sanskriti (Sanjana Sarathi).

In the meantime, Dimple is still – naturally – hanging on to the leak of the source code of its app AntiSosh. She wants to find out who is behind it, but her professor Siddharth Sinha (Ranvijay Singh) is telling her to move on. In addition, Mismatch Season 2 continues its LGBTQ+ themes, exploring mental health and promising an augmented reality dance-off.

Vidya Malvade, Muskan Jaffrey, Taruk Raina, Kritika Bharadwaj, and Abhinav Sharma also return as part of the cast of Mismatch Season 2. Akarsh Khurana is back as the director.

All Mismatched Season 2 episodes will be released simultaneously on October 14.

Shantaram

When: October 14
Where: Apple TV+

Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) stars as a drug-addicted fugitive from an Australian prison set out of 1980s Bombay in this 12-episode-long series. Based on the eponymous novel by Gregory David Roberts, Shantaram follows a desperate overseas voyage as he loses himself in a chaotic and unfamiliar Indian city in search of purpose. Having enough experience with heroin and other substances, he re-establishes himself as a doctor – thanks to a fake passport – a welcome sign in the Dalit slums of Bombay.

As luck would have it, Hunnam’s character Lynn stumbles and falls in love with Carla (Antonia Desplat), who aims to uncover her secrets. In the book, she offers him roles in several Bollywood films, as an extra, eventually rising his rank until he is recruited by the criminal underworld headed by Khader Khan (Alexander Siddig). Not a long lasting relationship plan, is it? There is also a mention of him being fluent in Marathi, though we highly doubt seeing it in the show.

Apple acquired the rights to the book in 2018, after which they cast Radhika Apte (Sacred Games) to play the role of Kavita Singh, an Indian journalist. However, plans seem to have changed now, with the studio opting for Sujaya Dasgupta (Shadow and Bone) instead.

Shantaram began with a three-episode premiere on October 14, while the remaining nine episodes would air once per week from Friday to November 25.

Hey, I want one of those too!

This could be the future of his world.
