Los Angeles. A new study has shown that the antiviral drug tecavirimet is effective in treating monkeypox infection. A small study of 25 patients infected with monkeypox has been published in the journal JAMA. This is the first assessment of the outcome of treatment of monkeypox patients with antivirals. Tecovirimate (TPOXX) is an antiviral medication used to treat chickenpox. This medicine limits the spread of the virus in the body by inhibiting the activity of proteins that open the outer covering of the virus.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently approved the use of tecovirimet to treat patients with monkeypox and other orthopoxvirus infections.

“We have very limited clinical data on the use of tecovirimet for monkeypox infection,” said lead study author and senior infectious disease specialist at the University of California, Angel Desai. More studies are needed to learn about the natural progression of the disease and the effects of tecovirimet and other antiviral drugs on it.
