Five years after his conviction and after serving a 580-day sentence, ex-president Lula has entered the presidential race. His party had been overtaken by corruption scandals which precipitated the fall in 2016 of the one who had succeeded him as head of state, Dilma Rousseff, and paved the way for a victory for populist Jair Bolsonaro.
Back to the polls for a Lula-Bolsonaro clash, this time. While the first round takes place on October 2, the historic figure of the left who has already served two terms at the helm of the country, has more than 10 points ahead of the outgoing president. On the ground of the countryside, the climate is under tension. There have been assaults, even murders, and Jair Bolsonaro continues to claim that he will not recognize defeat. Raising fears of a Trump scenario with the assault on the Capitol.
The Evangelical Pivotal Vote
But Lula also has fierce critics, especially among evangelicals who are the ones who swung the vote in favor of Bolsonaro in previous elections. Lula remains strong from his experience as president when Bolsonaro only has a disastrous record to advance, with in particular a Covid crisis with 700,000 dead and the return of food insecurity. We are talking, with 47% of intention to vote according to the polls, of an election in the first round for Lula. The undecided are however numerous and the second round which would take place only on October 30 would leave a time when all the shots will be allowed.
