London:
Vinesh Phogat emulated the feat of wrestler Sushil Kumar to win her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal in Birmingham on Saturday, 6 August. The 27-year-old Vinesh, who left the sport after a heartbreak at the Tokyo Olympics, performed brilliantly. Vinesh Phogat won the women’s 53kg gold by defeating Chamoda Keshani Maduravalge Don of Sri Lanka in her final round-robin bout in the Nordic system. Vinesh beat all her 3 rivals in the category by a wide margin. This was India’s 5th gold medal in wrestling at the Commonwealth Games 2022. Earlier in wrestling, Ravi Dahiya won gold in men’s 57 kg category. A day earlier, Sakshi Malik, Deepak Punia and Bajrang Punia had won gold medals.
