Zagreb. At least three people were killed and 11 others injured when a passenger train and a goods train collided in central Croatia on Friday night. Police said in a statement that the collision took place near Novska near the border between Croatia and Bosnia at around 9:30 pm. Croatia’s Prime Minister Lady Plenkovic said “the confrontation was terrible.”

Plenkovic confirmed that three bodies had been recovered from the crash site so far. He said that the injured have been admitted to the hospital, some of whom are seriously injured, but no one is in danger. It is not yet known what caused the collision. Plankovic said the passenger train was running on a local line and had 13 people on board, while the freight train had only the engine driver. He said citizens of other countries were also among the injured.

Officials said that both the trains have derailed and investigation has been started in the matter. Police said in a statement that the collision occurred at around 9:30 pm near the town of Novska, which is located near the Croatian border with Bosnia. Police said emergency response teams have been dispatched to the spot and rescue operations are on. Croatian media reported that a passenger train collided with a stationary freight train. Several reports said that the train overturned due to the collision.

Croatian Prime Minister Ledi Plenkovic and other officials have arrived at the scene, news agency AP quoted state-run HRT television as saying. Health Minister Willy Beros told HRT that many people have died and many others have been injured in this horrific accident. But he did not give any information about this. Officials said the injured were being taken to regional hospitals.
