Preparations for Indo-US joint military exercise near LAC
A joint military exercise will be conducted in Uttarakhand’s Auli in mid-October

Washington. India is now gearing up to rein in China’s aggressive activities along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with India. India is preparing for a joint military exercise with the US less than 100 kilometers (62 mi) from the disputed border with China. The military exercise will be conducted in mid-October at Auli in Uttarakhand at an altitude of 10,000 feet. In which the focus will be on combat training in high altitude areas. Auli is a remote land, about 95 km from China’s Line of Actual Control (LAC).
According to news agency Bhasha, the military exercise of the two countries will be conducted as part of the 18th edition of the annual joint exercise. Significantly, relations between India and China have become tense since the deadly clash between Chinese soldiers and Indian soldiers in Galvan Valley of Ladakh in June 2020. At least 20 Indian soldiers and four Chinese soldiers are reported to have been killed in the clashes in Galwan. The recent construction of a bridge over Pangong Tso Lake on China’s border has escalated tensions.

During his visit to India this year, General Charles Flynn, the US Army’s Pacific Commanding General, had described China’s military gathering near the disputed border as “dangerous”. Asked about this joint study, a US Defense Department spokesperson said the partnership with India is “one of the most important elements of our shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific region”. A significant part of this comprehensive effort includes joint military exercises and training programmes, the spokesperson said. This Yudh Abhyas is an annual bilateral military exercise designed to improve the capabilities of the armies of both sides and address a long range of regional security challenges.
