New Delhi. Russia has assured India of full cooperation and intelligence sharing in terrorism-related matters after an Islamic State (IS) terrorist was detained. The terrorist had received special training to carry out the deadly attack on BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, who was suspended for making objectionable remarks on Prophet Mohammad. Sources told News18 that a delegation of India’s security group in Moscow was briefed soon after the arrest of the terrorist, identified as Azamov, a resident of the Central Asian country.

Sources told News18 that Azmov, who was born in 1992, was recruited by ISIS to Turkey. where he trained and was sent to Russia to obtain an Indian visa. Sources said they were assured of local assistance on their arrival in New Delhi.

During interrogation, Azamov reportedly revealed that he had joined an online extremist group and had not met any of the ISIS leaders. Sources said they said they were sent to Russia as part of the second phase of the operation.

According to Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), Azamov was recruited by an Islamic State leader as a suicide bomber in Turkey between April and June 2022.

There was a conspiracy to kill Nupur Sharma by blowing up
The Federal Security Service has identified and arrested a member of the Islamic State international terrorist organization. The FSB said Ajmov was a native of a Central Asian country, who had planned to kill Nupur Sharma, a suspended leader of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), by blown himself up.

The Federal Security Service’s Public Relations Center (CPR) said the terrorist communicated through Telegram Messenger and also held personal meetings with IS representatives in Istanbul through the same means. In the report, the FSB said that the suicide bomber took an oath of allegiance to an ‘amir’ (chief) of ISIS, after which he was instructed to go to Russia, prepare the necessary documents and go to India to carry out the attack.

In a video of the interrogation released by CPR on Monday, the terrorist, whose face was blurred, said he had taken an oath of allegiance to the IS emir in April 2022 and had undergone special training. After which he took a flight to Russia, from where he was to travel to India. He said in broken Russian, ‘I was given things to do a terrorist attack there (in India) at the behest of IS to insult Prophet Muhammad.’

Notably, BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma was suspended and the party’s Delhi media chief Naveen Kumar Jindal was expelled. Because there were protests in Muslim countries earlier this year after his controversial remarks against the Prophet.

The dreaded terrorist group ISIS and all its allies are responsible for a series of barbaric attacks and killings in Iraq and Syria. It is banned in India under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. While banning terrorist groups, the Home Ministry had said that recruitment and radicalization of youth from India in terrorist organizations is a matter of grave concern to the country. Especially when such youth return to India, it becomes a major threat to national security.

A notification issued by the ministry last year said Islamic State/Islamic State of Iraq and Levant/Islamic State of Iraq and Syria/Daesh and all its variants have been outlawed in India under UAPA.
