According to information received from some industry sources, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued a letter of intent (LoI) to the satellite unit of Reliance Jio Infocomm. This permission will allow Jio to establish global mobile personal communication by satellite (GMPCS) services in the areas for which it has got a license to operate. Mobile satellite networks can operate in sync with Low-Earth Orbit (LEO), Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) as well as Geosynchronous (GEO) satellites.
According to a PTI report, citing industry sources, the satellite arm of Reliance Jio Infocomm, also known as Jio Satellite Communications Limited (JSCL), has received a letter of intent (LoI) from the Department of Telecommunications of India. which has allowed the company to set up. Top up and operate global mobile personal communication by satellite (GMPCS) services.
According to sources, the LOI was issued to the telecom company on Monday. With the permit, Reliance Jio can install and operate GMPCS services in areas for which the government has licensed it.
The licenses issued to the company will be valid for a period of 20 years. They shall be effective from the date of award to the Company after fulfillment of the prescribed conditions.
GMPCS services provide voice and data services via satellite. As for operations, these mobile satellites can operate in conjunction with low-Earth orbit (LEO), medium Earth orbit (MEO) and geosynchronous (GEO) satellites.
Earlier this year, Reliance Jio announced its plans to provide satellite-based broadband services across India in collaboration with Luxembourg-based SES. The new move brings Jio on par with Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Sunil Mittal’s OneWeb in providing high-speed internet services.
