‘Now PM Modi can stop Russia-Ukraine war…’, Mexico’s foreign minister said at UN

Pittsburgh. Mexico has proposed to the United Nations to set up a committee to prevent the Russo-Ukraine war. The committee has proposed to involve Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pope Francis and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to mediate lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine. The proposal was put forward at the UN Security Council debate on Ukraine in New York. The proposal was made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mexico Marcelo Luis Ebrard Casabon.

According to PTI, Modi, who met Putin on the sidelines of the 22nd meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, told the Russian leader, “Today’s era is not of war.” Western countries including France and the United Kingdom welcomed.

Casabon proposed to the United Nations that on the basis of its pacifist stance, Mexico believed that the international community should now do its best to achieve peace. In this regard, I would like to share with you the proposal of the President of Mexico, Andres Manuel López Obrador, to strengthen the mediation efforts of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres through the formation of a Committee for Dialogue and Peace in Ukraine. If possible, it should include His Excellencies Narendra Modi and Pope Francis as well as other Presidents and Heads of Government.

Casabon added that as the Secretary-General has said, it is time to work for peace and be committed to peace. The Mexican foreign minister argued that peace could be achieved through dialogue, diplomacy and the creation of effective political channels. He stressed that this is the right time to take a serious look at peace.
