Truss won 81,326 of the 1,72,437 votes cast by Conservative Party members, Returning Officer Graham Brady announced Monday afternoon. Truss’s rival Rishi Sunak got 60,399 votes, while 654 of them were rejected. The election was necessitated after Boris Johnson announced his resignation as Prime Minister on 7 July following his involvement in the Partygate scandal. In addition to former minister Rishi Sunak and former health secretary Sajid Javid, Johnson announced the resignation of several ministers and aides from Johnson’s cabinet, making elections mandatory in the country. Sunak and Truss, who had served as foreign secretary under Johnson, emerged as the contenders to replace Johnson. Truss will now travel to Scotland on Tuesday to meet with Queen Elizabeth, who will ask the new leader to form the government. She will be the Conservative Party’s fourth prime minister after the 2015 election.
