Japanese sailors attacked, stabbed in the neck at Solomon Islands memorial gathering

Wellington. A man attacked a Japanese sailor during a World War II memorial service in the Solomon Islands on Monday. US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Ruth Sherman also participated in this meeting. According to Radio New Zealand, the victim is a member of the Japanese Navy’s media team. The attacker hit his neck with scissors in two places, causing minor injuries. To mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Guadalcanal during World War II, the government of the Solomon Islands organized this memorial meeting at Bloody Ridge.

Radio New Zealand spoke to doctors who said the victim needed stitches but was recovering. Bloody Ridge community chief Wesley Remo said the suspect was from a neighboring community. He was intoxicated and mentally unstable, which led to the incident

Japan’s Minister of State for Defense Makoto Oniki and New Zealand Defense Minister Pini Henare also attended the ceremony. The perpetrators of the attack were taken away from the ceremony by the police and after a short interval the ceremony was resumed.

A three-day commemoration is being held in the Solomon Islands to mark the anniversary of the war. Bloody Ridge is a small hill where American Marines defeated a Japanese force in September 1942.
