With tearful eyes, Sheikh Hasina recalled the year 1975 when she had to leave Bangladesh to join her nuclear scientist husband in Germany. At that time Hasina and her sister’s family had come to the airport to see them off. But this farewell proved to be his last meeting with his parents.
In an interview to news agency ANI, Sheikh Hasina recalled the darkest chapter in the history of Bangladesh, saying, “Because my husband was abroad, I lived in the same house with my parents. We were all there that day. Were, my father, mother, my three brothers, two newly married sister-in-law, all were there. That is, all the brothers and sisters and their spouses. They had come to the airport to see us off. We met our parents and brought that last of our union. It was the day.”
A few days later, on 15 August 1975, Hasina received the news of the murder of her father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He also came to know about the hanging of other members of his family. Sheikh Hasina said it was really unbelievable. It is also unbelievable how a Bengali can do that. We still don’t know what really happened. Only there was a coup and then we heard that my father had been murdered. After that we did not know where all the members of our family were. Later, you know, they were all killed. ,
Sheikh Hasina said that India was the first country that helped me. He said, ‘The then PM Indira Gandhi immediately sent a message that she wanted to give us security and shelter. I was specifically promised security by Yugoslavian Marshal Tito and Indira Gandhi. We decided to come to Delhi because we had a mind that if we were going to Delhi, we would be able to go to our country. And then we will know how many members of the family are still alive.” After this Sheikh Hasina came to Delhi and was kept under tight security as those who killed her father also attacked the houses of other relatives and killed some of her relatives. killed.
Sheikh Hasina said that about 18 members were killed, mostly my relatives, some servants and their children, some guests and my uncle. The conspirators wanted that no member of Bangabandhu’s family should ever come to power. Recalling the incident, Sheikh Hasina said, “When we came to Delhi it was probably 24th August. I met Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. There we come to know that no one is alive. Then she made all the arrangements for us. My husband. Arrangements were made to get a job and stay at home on Pandara Road. We stayed there.”
Sheikh Hasina said that the first 2-3 years were really tough. My kids were very young. My son was only 4 years old. My little daughter used to cry. They were all insisting on passing it to my parents. They all remember my younger brother now.” Sheikh Hasina was forced to stay in Delhi to hide her identity as her life was in danger. She lived here by many names. Bangladesh was under several years of political chaos and military rule after Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family members were assassinated by senior military officers on August 15, 1975.
