Legend has it that Lord Rama killed Ravana on Vijayadashami. There is also a legend that on this day the Pandavas returned from exile. Before going into exile, the Pandavas hid their weapons in a drum on the Shami tree. One of them is the story of how Arjuna, in the form of Brihannade, used a Gandiva bow and some arrows to save Virata’s cows, and put them back on the tree after the performance. Therefore, Vijayadashami is celebrated by worshiping Shami.
The tree whose leaves are plucked on Vijayadashami is called Ashmantak. These leaves are effective against pitta and kapha doshas.
