Digital and environment: highly sought-after cross-skills

Si le numérique est l'un des importants émetteurs de CO2, son important potentiel pour décarboner l'ensemble des activités humaines est plus rarement évoqué.

Not a day goes by without a medium condemning digital technology for its unsustainable carbon footprint. If the level of misinformation in this regard is impressive (just a few days ago a business weekly mentioned the fact that 20 e-mails represent 100 km by car, or 10 kg of CO2which is absurd), digital is nonetheless one of the major emitters of CO2 and it must improve its footprint through a set of processes that are generally summarized under the term “Green IT”.

But what is more rarely mentioned is the significant potential of digital technology to decarbonize all human activities. After optimizing the means of energy production (replacing thermal power plants with non-carbon means of production), digital probably comes directly behind to make the environmental transition a success, as its fields of application seem unlimited.
