23 people missing after Hurricane Ian sinks in Florida

New Delhi. The US Border Patrol said Wednesday that 23 people are missing off the coast of Florida after a Cuban passenger boat capsized in the wake of Hurricane Ian. Border Patrol agents respond to a passenger landing in Stock Island, Florida. Officials announced on Twitter that the US Coast Guard has launched a search operation for 23 missing people. Chief Patrol Agent Walter Schlosser said four Cuban passengers swam ashore after the ship capsized in bad weather. Local media said all four have been admitted to the hospital.

On the other hand, last Tuesday, the storm caused havoc in Cuba. 11 lakh people had to face trouble due to power failure. The western end of the island was devastated by violent winds and floods. Early Wednesday, the state electricity provider said it had started restoring power to the eastern end of the island. The storm has hit Cuba during a time of severe economic crisis. Cubans have long struggled with blackouts, shortages of food, medicine and fuel. In this way, the storm added to their troubles. On Tuesday, seven Cuban tourists were taken into custody after bathing in the sea at Pompano Beach, Florida, US officials said.

Announcing the detainees on Twitter on Tuesday, officials said, “Don’t put your life at risk by attempting this voyage at sea. A typhoon with a king tide can cause dangerous sea conditions even after the storm has passed. The storm hit Florida’s Gulf Coast on Wednesday with strong winds and rain.
