WhatsApp testing ability to hide online status on latest Android beta update: Report

Tata Group in talks with Wistron to manufacture iPhone in India: Report

WhatsApp is bringing the ability to hide online status to some beta testers with the latest WhatsApp beta update for Android 2.22.20.9. The update will reportedly replace the ‘Last Seen’ tab in the Privacy section of your account settings with a ‘Last Seen and Online’ tab. WhatsApp currently offers users the option to change their Last Seen status. This update will let users choose who can see their last seen status and who can see it while they’re online. This update is rolling out gradually to select beta testers. There’s no word on when it plans to expand the rollout from Meta-owned platforms.

According to A Report WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.22.20.9 is rolling out slowly, via WhatsApp features tracker WABetaInfo. The update is said to include an option to hide online status. However, this update is not available on Play Store. Additionally, WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.22.20.7 is also compatible with this new feature.

WhatsApp beta users have to go to use this option Settings > Account > Privacy > Last Seen & Online, here they will have the option to show their online status to ‘everyone’ or keep it as their last seen status. For example, this new option can be used to show your online status to everyone while hiding your last seen status.

WhatsApp was believed to have worked on the privacy feature in July this year. Later that month WhatsApp for Android version 2.222.16.12 appeared on the beta.

Meta CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg announced last week that WhatsApp will soon get three new privacy features, including the aforementioned online status setting. Two other privacy features include exiting group chats without notifying other members and preventing screenshots once a message has been viewed.
