On 29 September 2008, a bomb exploded in the premises of a mosque in Malegaon. Seven people lost their lives and many were injured. Lt Col Prasad Purohit, Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur along with Ramesh Upadhyay, Sameer Kulkarni, Sudhakar Chaturvedi, Sudhakar Dwivedi and Ajay Rahirkar were arrested in this case. A case was registered against these accused under sections 16 (committing terroristic act) and 18 (conspiracy). Relevant provisions of the Explosive Substances Act, including UAPA sections 120(b) (criminal conspiracy), 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 324 (causing hurt), and 153(a) (inciting enmity between two religious groups) Earlier the Anti-Terrorism Squad was probing the case. However, the investigation was later handed over to the NIA. The matter has been adjourned till September 27 for further hearing.
