US to give more aid to Ukraine between Russia and war, may provide $3 billion more military aid

Washington: The Biden administration is expected to announce an additional $3 billion in aid to Ukraine’s military on Wednesday. US officials said the amount could be released in the coming years to train Ukrainian soldiers for combat.

Officials said the package could be spent on contracts for three types of drones and other weapons and equipment, which are expected to be used within the next two years. The total amount of the package being given under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative may vary slightly. Officials said it would fund the purchase of the small, hand-operated Puma drone, the long-range Scan Eagle surveillance drone and the ship-launchable British Vampire drone system.

Several officials spoke on condition of anonymity before the announcement of US financial aid to Ukraine was made public. US officials said Russia’s attacks on Ukraine are continuing and US security aid is turning into a long-term mission that will see more US military troops stationed in Europe in the future.

Wednesday is a holiday in Ukraine, marking its independence day, and Wednesday marks six months since the start of the Russian attack on it. Officials say that unlike most previous packages, the new funding is aimed at helping Ukraine secure its defense system in the medium to long term.
