America’s 3 largest pharmaceutical companies fined
Accused of promoting drug overdose and addiction
Many deaths and diseases are caused by drugs
Lake County (USA). Carrying painkillers on your mind is nothing new all over the world. Pharmaceutical companies have also increased the production of opium-based drugs over the past two decades. The result of which is also visible. Recently in India also a law has been proposed to control codeine based cough medicines. Now this matter has happened in America as well. A US federal judge has ordered three of America’s largest drug companies to pay $650.5 million to help increase the supply of painkillers to two Ohio countries.
The court found that Walgreens, Boots Alliance, CVS and Walmart helped to supply more of the addictive opium pills. The money from the fines imposed on the companies will be used to deal with the crisis in Lake and Trumbull counties. The companies are now planning to appeal against the decision. Over the past 20 years in the US, millions of people have become addicted to opioid pain relievers such as fentanyl and Oxycontin. Between 1999 and 2019, nearly 5 lakh people lost their lives due to overdose of painkillers.
400 tablets distributed per person
The court put the total financial cost of the crisis at $3.3 billion in Lake and Trumbull counties, near Cleveland. Like other US jurisdictions, both countries have argued that the crisis has severely strained their local resources, social programs and law enforcement. Lawyers said that the entire society has been shaken by the flood of bullets at the local level. Between 2012 and 2016, approximately 80 million painkillers were distributed in Trumbull County. That is, about 400 pills per person. At the same time, about 61 million bullets were sold in Lake County. The US district judge said in his order that Lake County would be paid $306 million over 15 years. Trumbull will receive $344 million. The governments of both the countries have appreciated this decision.
The companies denied the allegations, accused the doctors
The three companies have consistently denied the allegations against them, saying they have always tried to curb the illegal use of painkillers. He says it is not the company’s fault but the doctors, who determine how many pills to take and for how long.
