There seems to be no way around another Berlin-wide election campaign. On Wednesday, the Berlin Constitutional Court surprisingly clearly considered a complete repetition at an oral hearing on the validity of the election of September 26, 2021, which shocked politicians. President Ludgera Selting explained the court’s preliminary assessment, which does not yet mean a verdict, in the preparation and conduct of the election.

Since the election to the Berlin House of Representatives, which was overshadowed by breakdowns, will most likely have to be repeated in its entirety, the left wants to readjust its election campaign preparations, among other things. They will “focus on a complete repeat election,” said state manager Sebastian Koch on Thursday. A campaign will start as soon as an election date has been announced.

A problem for the left as well as for all other parties is the financing of another election campaign. »As a rule, the election campaign fund is replenished between the elections. But we will be able to support the election campaign by reaching into our reserves,” said Koch.

Berlin’s deputy head of government Bettina Jarasch (Greens) wants to concentrate on the issues despite the possible repetition of the election to the House of Representatives. “We are facing a severe winter of crisis and, as the Senate, we are responsible for ensuring that we do not come to a standstill,” said the Senator for the Environment and Transport on Thursday. Among other things, it is important to put together a relief package and to draw up a supplementary budget. “The last thing Berliners need right now is mutual campaign blockades,” Jarasch emphasized.

The Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD) has promised comprehensive preparations in the event of a repeat election so that there are no more breakdowns. “I can’t undo what happened there, but I can make sure – now that I have political responsibility – that it doesn’t happen again and that we go into such a by-election or repeat election in a well-positioned, well-organized manner,” said Giffey on Thursday in Cottbus. “We have appointed a new state returning officer, we have evaluated the report of the expert commission and are preparing everything that is necessary for this.”

The Governing Mayor emphasized that the decision on this lies with the Constitutional Court. On Wednesday there was an initial assessment that “shows where things are going,” said Giffey. The Senate will do everything to accompany the proceedings at the Constitutional Court well. “We will deal responsibly and professionally with the court’s decision and respect it,” Giffey said, according to the Senate Chancellery. She also pointed out that at the time of the previous election she “didn’t have any political responsibility” but was a candidate.

Giffey explained that despite all the questions about a repeat election, the focus must be on overcoming the energy crisis, the corona pandemic and the refugee situation. “The focus must be on getting our population through this crisis well,” said the SPD politician. It is about an energy price cap, relief, economic aid, an industrial policy concept and the question of how social institutions can be maintained and how people can be relieved. With agencies
