Rome. Right-wing leader Giorgia Meloni’s electoral coalition has won Italy’s general election, according to exit polls. Georgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party is ahead in Sunday’s elections. The party is expected to get 22 per cent to 26 per cent votes. Meloni, along with his far-right League ally Matteo Salvini and former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia, hope to win a clear majority in both houses of parliament.

Georgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy and a coalition of two right-wing parties are expected to get 45 percent of the vote in both houses of parliament, according to AFP news agency. His closest rival appears to be a left-wing coalition led by former prime minister Enrico Letta’s Democratic Party, which exit polls indicate will win 29.5% of the vote. There could be a difference of 3.5 percentage points between this exit poll and the final results.

Giorgia Meloni, 45, will be in a good majority to become Italy’s first far-right prime minister since the end of World War II and the country’s first woman to hold the position. His party, with its neo-fascist roots, would need to form a coalition with its main allies, Anti-Immigration League leader Matteo Salvini and conservative former Premier Silvio Berlusconi, to gain a solid majority in parliament.

The sudden rise of Giorgia Meloni in Italy, the EU’s third largest economy, is like a meteorite. This comes at a critical time when much of the European continent is grappling with rising inflation due to rising oil prices. This crisis is the result of the war in Ukraine. Simultaneously, the determination of the Western countries to unite against the Russian invasion is also being tested.
