Colombo: Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe on Tuesday said his government will support India-Japan’s efforts for permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSP). President Wickremesinghe is currently in Japan to attend the state funeral of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. During his meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi on Tuesday, Wickremesinghe appreciated the international support extended by Japan to Sri Lanka, a press release issued by the President’s Office said.

According to the release, Wickremesinghe said that his government is ready to support both the countries’ (India-Japan) campaign to become permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. India has been very active in its efforts to reform the Security Council over the years. India maintains that it deserves to be a permanent member of the Security Council and the current draft of the Security Council does not reflect the geopolitical realities of the 21st century.

Currently, the United Nations Security Council has five permanent members and 10 non-permanent member states. The non-permanent members are elected by the United Nations General Assembly for a term of two years.

The five permanent members include Russia, Britain, China, France and the US and these countries have veto power, which allows them to block any resolution. India is currently one of the non-permanent members of the Security Council, but its term will end in December.
