News Agency, Moscow: Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev (91), who played a very important role in ending the Cold War, died on Tuesday. He had been ill for the past several months. He died during treatment in the hospital. Gorbachev, who succeeded in stopping the Cold War, could not prevent the disintegration of the Soviet Union.

Gorbachev became the General Secretary of the Communist Party in 1985 at the age of 53. He remained in this post till 1991. Then the federation collapsed. He implemented a program of political and economic reforms called ‘glasnost’ and ‘perestroika’. His reformist stand was strongly opposed by many in Russia. In Europe, as demonstrations in support of democracy by communists increased in the Soviet Union, Gorbachev avoided the use of force. In contrast, previous leaders sent tanks to crush protesters in Hungary in 1956 and Czechoslovakia in 1968.

Gorbachev’s major changes included reducing the party’s control over government machinery. His initiative led to the release of thousands of political prisoners. He signed a nuclear disarmament agreement with the US. For this they are known all over the world. He was honored with many awards. The most important of these was the Nobel Peace Prize awarded in 1990. He was honored for his significant contribution in ending the Cold War without bloodshed.

Mikhail Sergeevich Gorbachev was born on March 2, 1931 in the then southern Russian village of Privolnoye. He started helping his father at the age of fifteen. Since his parents were doing party related work, he also started party related work from the age of seventeen. From here he got admission in the most prestigious university in Moscow. There he met Reza Maximovna Titorenko. Later both of them got married. He later joined the party. He was elected to the powerful Central Committee of the party in 1971. He implemented the agricultural policy in 1978 and rose through the ranks to become a member of the party’s Politburo in 1980.
