Samsung Cuts 2022 Smartphone Shipments Target to 260 Million Units Due to Supply Chain Constraints: Report

Samsung has lowered its smartphone shipment target for 2022. The South Korean giant had planned to produce 334 million handsets earlier this year and was aiming to ship around 300 million units of its phone, according to reports. The company has now lowered its phone shipment target to 260 million units for 2022. The report states that Samsung shipped 270 million smartphones in 2021 and the new target is even lower than that. Samsung saw the biggest drop in phone shipments in 2020.

According to A Report Via TheElec, the South Korean giant has lowered its smartphone shipment target for 2022 from 260 million units to 300 million units. Samsung is said to have taken the decision due to the slump in the global economy, supply chain disruptions and overall low demand for phones. Earlier this year, the company had set a target of producing around 334 million phones, the report said.

According to the report, Samsung shipped 270 million smartphones in 2021. The company saw its biggest drop in phone shipments in 2020 due to the pandemic when it shipped only 250 million units. The new target appears to be lower between the number of units shipped in 2021 and 2020. Before the pandemic, the South Korean company shipped more than 300 million smartphones per year.

According to the report, of the 334 million phones Samsung plans to produce this year, 284 million phones would have been manufactured at the company’s own facilities, and the remaining 50 million units would have been manufactured with partners in China. The report further states that Samsung is currently planning to produce around 34 million units between October and November this year. This is said to be significantly less than the units produced in the previous quarter this year and the same quarter in 2021.

Samsung had recently said that the ongoing inflation is unlikely to affect smartphone demand in India. Samsung also said it expects double-digit growth in volume this year.
