Mumbai-born controversial writer Rushdie faced death threats from Islamic extremists for years after writing The Satanic Verses. He was stabbed to death by a 24-year-old New Jersey resident at an event in western New York state. New York State Police Major Eugene Stanijewski said at a news conference Friday evening that Hadi Matar, 24, of Fairview, New Jersey, has been identified as the suspect who stabbed Rushdie.

Rushdie, 75, was on stage at the Chautauqua Institution when he was stabbed in the neck. The Chautauqua Institution is a non-profit community on Chautauqua Lake in southwestern New York state, home to approximately 7,500 people on any given day during the nine-week season.

Stanijewski said a doctor present at the event gave Rushdie “immediate first aid” until emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene. The writer was then taken to a local trauma center and underwent ‘surgery’ at around 10:47 pm local time, several hours after the attack.

In response to a question about Pea’s nationality, Stanijewski said, ‘I don’t know about it yet.’ “We’re trying to get an update,” Stanijewski said. He said the officials are in the process of obtaining search warrants for various items. A bag has been recovered from the spot. There were also electrical appliances’. He said that for the time being, it is believed that the suspect had “committed the whole incident”.

“We are working with the FBI, the Sheriff’s Office, to determine the motive for the attack,” Stanijewski said. Rushdie was supposed to lecture at a special event in Chautauqua.
