Goddard’s partner Anne-Marie Miville and his producers said his family was with him when he breathed his last at their home on Lake Geneva on Tuesday, according to Swiss news agency ATS.

According to BBC report Government in Switzerland allows ‘voluntary death’ in special circumstances, Goddard’s legal adviser Patrick Jeanneret told AFP news agency that the French film director was suffering from several serious and unusual ailments. He had taken permission from the government for ‘voluntary death’ on the basis of a medical report.
Born in Paris in 1930
Jean-Luc Godard was born on 3 December 1930 in Paris to an affluent French-Swiss family. However, he was raised in Nyon, Switzerland. He graduated from the Sorbonne University in Paris with a degree in Anthropology. After World War II, the cine club became more inclined towards the cultural landscape of the Latin Quarters. He became friends with such great directors as Francis Truffaut, Jacques Rivet and Eric Romer. By the year 1952, he started writing in the prestigious film magazine ‘Cahiers du Cinema’.
He started his career as a film critic
Jean-Luc Godard began his career as a film critic in the 1950s. He will be remembered as the one who ushered in a new era in the world of cinema. He made new rules for the camera, sound and narration of the film. Goddard made several films that were politically sensitive and experimental. Some people outside his small group of fans were happy with those films. Many critics disliked his hyper-intellectualism. His movies are ‘My Life to Live’, ‘Alfaville’, ‘Crazy Pete’, ‘The Little Soldier’ etc. He later came to be known as a man who did not compromise on his left-wing political views.

French President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute, saying Goddard was “one of the biggest challengers to conservatism among the directors of the New Wave”. He pioneered a completely modern, extremely eclectic art form.’ Micron said, “We have lost our national heritage…” Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Fremaux, on the other hand, told the AP on Tuesday that he was deeply saddened to hear of Goddard’s death. Goddard’s films made Jean Paul Belmondo a star. Her controversial film ‘Hail Mary’ came into limelight when Pope John Paul II condemned her in 1985. (with language input)
