Paramount Pictures to Revive Lindsay Lohan’s Mean Girls in Web3 Avatar, Here’s The Buzz

Mean Girls, the popular Hollywood teen comedy film that was released in 2004, may be due for a Web3 revamp. Paramount Pictures, the rights holder of the movie starring Lindsay Lohan, is making a comeback as a ‘crypto-collectible’ form. The production house has filed an application for a trademark that gives a glimpse of what elements of the film could be modified soon and includes Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). Built on the blockchain, NFTs are digital collectibles inspired by real-life people, objects, and artifacts, among other things.

Trademark applications mention ‘downloadable multimedia files containing artwork’ as well as ‘downloadable virtual objects’ and ‘application tokens’.

While Paramount Pictures has not announced its intentions with this Web3 trademark filing surrounding Mean Girls, screenshots of the paperwork have surfaced on social media.

Mean Girls, which revolves around a young girl’s entrance into a tight-knit group of four fashion divas, is one of the most quotable movies of all time and the source of countless memes and GIFs.

Since its launch, every year October 3 has been celebrated as Mean Girls Day by fans of the film which also starred Rachel McAdams, Tina Fey, Amanda Seyfried and Lacey Chabert.

Linking popular movies to the Web3 domain has become a trend in recent times.

Just this month, mass media conglomerate Viacom International filed a similar trademark to extend The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles brand to Web3.

This year, so far, the number of NFT applications has surpassed those submitted in the crypto, web3 and metaverse arenas. As of this time, more than 5,800 applications and patents related to NFT have already been filed in the USPTO. In 2021, the number is 2,087, Condoulis recently claimed.

In a recent report, Dune Analytics claimed that NFT projects churned $260 million (roughly Rs. 2,100 crore) for several high-end brands including Nike, Dolce & Gabbana, Tiffany and Gucci. Among these brands, Nike fetched the highest amount in NFT sales, at around $185.3 million (roughly Rs. 1,500 crore).
