1574: Death of Sikh Guru Amar Das
Amar Das, the third Guru of the Sikhs, was born on 1 October 1574 in Basar village, Amritsar. Guru Amardasji was a great spiritual thinker. Even though he was engaged in farming and business throughout the day, he was still engrossed in the chanting of Harinama. People called him Bhakta Amar Dasji.
1847: Annie Besant was born in London
Doctor. Annie Besant was born on 1 October 1847. She was a prominent spiritualist, theosophist, women’s rights advocate, writer, speaker and India lover. In 1917, she also became the President of the Indian National Congress. Annie Besant’s inspiration inspired many social workers in India.
1854: Postage stamp was introduced in India
On this day i.e. 1 October 1854, postage stamps were introduced in India. Tickets for half anana, one anana, two anana and four ananas were issued. This first postage stamp was then printed in Calcutta and now in Kolkata.
1953: Formation of the state of Andhra Pradesh on linguistic basis
The state of Andhra Pradesh was formed on 1 October 1953 on the basis of language. From that day today is celebrated as Foundation Day in Rajasthan. Andhra Pradesh is the first state in India to be formed on the basis of language.
1958: Metric system for weight was introduced in India
During the British period, the British developed a uniform measurement system throughout the country. The units of weight were Maan, Ser, Chanak, Tola, Masha and Ratti. Miles, acres, yards, feet, inches were used to measure land. The system developed by the British was used even after independence till 1958. In 1958, the Government of India established new standards of measurement and the metric system of measurement became a trend across the country.
1967: Indian Tourism Development Corporation was established
