NavIC rollout: No timeline set for implementing indigenous GPS option, says MeitY

NavIC Rollout: No Timeline Fixed For Implementing Indigenous GPS Alternative, MeitY Says

The central government has said it has held a meeting with mobile manufacturers to discuss the compatibility of the domestic global positioning system – NavIC – in smartphones, but has not set a timeline for its implementation.

The government’s clarification on Monday came after media reports that India was considering making its indigenous navigation system mandatory “within months”.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) said the meeting was “consultative”.

“A media report cites a meeting that claims Mobile Cos was asked to make smartphones compatible with NavIC within months. This is to clarify: (1) no timeline has been set. (2) the meeting cited was advisory; and ( 3) Discussions on this issue with all stakeholders,” the Electronics and IT Ministry said in a tweet late on Monday night.

What is NavIC? How is it different from its previous version IRNSS?

NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) is the name of India’s independent independent navigation satellite system.

This system was earlier known as IRNSS (Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System).

The name NavIC was coined by the Prime Minister of India in April 2016 to mark the completion of Nakshatra.

Which navigation satellite systems are currently in operation in the world?

Currently, there are four global systems, US’s GPS, Russia’s GLONASS, European Union’s Galileo and China’s Beidou.

In addition, there are two regional systems, NavIC in India and QZSS in Japan.

What is the need for NavIC when GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and BeiDou are already working?

GPS and GLONASS are operated by defense agencies of respective nations. Civil services are likely to be degraded or denied.

NavIC is an independent regional system on Indian territory and does not depend on other systems to provide positioning services within the service area.

It is completely under the control of the Government of India.
