Nancy Elaine Anderson was found dead in the bathroom of her rental apartment in Waikiki in January 1972. He was stabbed 63 times in the torso, pelvis, arms and legs, three of which were very deep.
The DNA on a towel near a fire escape in his home and an entrance has been matched to that of prominent Reno attorney Tudor Chirilla five decades later. Police have arrested 77-year-old Chirila. He lived in Hawaii before pursuing a career as a lawyer in Nevada.
Michigan native Nancy Ellen Anderson had moved to Hawaii a few months before the murder. Initially it was feared that he might have committed suicide. However, the nature of the injuries on his body soon dispelled this possibility.
Over the years, several suspects were investigated, including her ex-boyfriend and door-to-door knife dealer. Because on the day of his death this vendor tried to sell him the blade. But their DNA did not match with the DNA found at the spot.

The case took a major turn in 2021, when the police received a tip that the former deputy attorney general might be involved in the case. But it is not clear what evidence was important in linking Chirilla to Anderson.
According to media reports, Chirila also tried to take her own life, but failed. He was taken into custody on Wednesday and has since been charged with the gruesome murder of Anderson.
Chirilla previously testified for the state in 1988 in a scandal involving the IRS and the Mustang Ranch brothel near Reno. It was a case related to money laundering.
