Jogi — out Friday on Netflix — is a fictional biopic, recounting the horrors of the 1984 anti-Sikh protests in Delhi. Singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh is at the helm of the project, guiding us through a heartwarming narrative that traces his journey from run-of-the-mill student to prime target; Based only on certain conspiracies related to his faith. Interestingly, the actor had earlier touched on a similar subject with the feature film Punjab 1984, though it was mostly set in the aftermath of these events.

This is clear Jogi Acts as a passion project for Dosanjh, who is making his digital streaming debut with Netflix. Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, the film will explore the fictional story of three friends – of different religions – who organize the biggest human heist, transporting friends and family from Delhi to Mohali, Punjab, in a narrow truck. The assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards led to anti-Sikh protests in Delhi in 1984. This angered the locals and led to massacres across the country, with around 2,800 Sikhs killed in Delhi alone.

Needless to say, handling such a political subject requires a sensitive approach. Zafar’s last venture, Tandav – now streaming on Amazon Prime Video – sparked controversy for its alleged portrayal of Hindu deities that hurt religious sentiments. with JogiThe filmmaker has taken measures to present the story in an authentic manner, saying that his team has no censorship guidelines for Tandav.

As the city of Delhi burns, another prominent figure, Kalim, rises to the occasion, guiding Jogi’s family through a mob of angry people armed with torches. The trailer, played by Paresh Pahuja (Tandav), suggests that he creates some kind of distraction, so Sikhs who take refuge in a nearby gurdwara can fearlessly board the truck.

Fourth on the list is Kumud Mishra (Sooryavanshi) as Tejpal, a corrupt politician who acts purely on emotion. On hearing the news of Indira Gandhi’s death, he ordered a list of Sikh names from the electoral roll. Tejpal appears to have ignited the riots by tasking a group of masked goons to torch all the houses and properties bearing Punjabi nameplates.

Other notable inclusions include Amyra Dastur as Jogi’s love interest, Kammo and Hiten Tejwani as Laali, Jogi and other Sikh allies. Information about the family is very sparse, all being considered minor characters. Weird, granted Netflix trailer Depicted them as the main driving force of the story, with ample screen time.
