Moscow: President Vladimir Putin on Monday granted Russian citizenship to Edward Snowden, who leaked US intelligence. Snowden is among 75 foreign nationals granted Russian citizenship, according to an order signed by the president. The order was shared on a government website.
Snowden, 39, leaked intelligence related to US security agencies in 2013, after which there was a ruckus. Snowden was working with the US National Security Agency at the time. Following the leak, Snowden fled to Russia, where he has been granted asylum.
American intelligence officials wanted Snowden to be brought to America for years so that he could be tried for spying against the country. According to US officials, if Snowden returns to the US, he could face up to 30 years in prison under US law.
