With torrential rain and strong winds, ‘Ian’ made landfall on Cuba’s west coast

The storm is moving rapidly north and is expected to cross the Gulf of Mexico and reach the coast of the US state of Florida by Wednesday. The storm has had a major impact on the electricity grid, leaving the entire country in the dark after its failure. However, work is also being done to restore ISCO soon. Violent winds and floods have wreaked havoc on the western tip of the island.
Lázaro Guerra, technical director of the Electric Union of Cuba, says Hurricane Ian has caused a complete shutdown of the national electricity system, according to state media. The storm has damaged a major power system, which will be repaired on a war footing today.
Meanwhile, after wreaking havoc in Canada and the Philippines, Hurricane Ian and Hurricane Noru are now wreaking havoc in Cuba and Vietnam. Fearing devastation due to the storm, lakhs of people from both the countries have been sent to safer places. Lakhs of jawans have been asked to be prepared to deal with any emergency.
The US National Hurricane Center (USNHC) said Ian made landfall off the coast of Cuba at 4.30 a.m. local time. Ian is a Category III cyclone with wind speeds of at least 205 km/h. By the time the storm hits the coast of Florida on Wednesday, it is expected to have weakened to a Category 4 hurricane.
In view of the storm, the Cuban government has evacuated more than 50 thousand people from Pinar del Río province to safer places. The government has set up dozens of shelters in the island nation. Ion has seen waves up to 14 feet high off the west coast of Cuba.
