Gaza: Hamas officials in Gaza on Sunday executed five Palestinians who were convicted on separate counts of murder and collaborating with Israel. The Home Ministry said that the purpose of hanging these people is to “gain public resistance and security”.
But human rights groups have questioned the Islamic terrorist group’s fair investigation standards in military and civilian courts. Two of those convicted were members of the Palestinian security forces who were shot dead while three others were sentenced to death.
Hamas captured Gaza in 2007 after fierce fighting with security forces loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. According to the Palestinian Human Rights Center, Hamas has announced the death penalty for 180 people.
Hamas and Israel have fought four wars and several other smaller wars since 2007. Recently in May 2021, there was a fierce confrontation between the two. Israel, the United States and the European Union consider Hamas a terrorist organization.
