This film was also discussed till the Oscars. Although many films have been made on the life of Mahatma Gandhi, but Mahatma Gandhi saw only one Hindi film in his life. When Mahatma Gandhi was preparing to return home from South Africa, the film industry in India was booming. Mahatma Gandhi was taking some political decisions in South Africa, at the same time the first film ‘Raja Harishchandra’ was released in India.
Moving ahead with independence as his goal, Mahatma Gandhi was not much fond of films. Many filmmakers tried to convince him about the power of films and its positive impact on the society and the general public. However, his opinion about films has not changed.
I have seen only 2 movies in my life
Mahatma Gandhi saw only two films in his entire life. The first film was ‘Mission to Moscow’, while the second film was ‘Ram Rajya’. The film was released in 1944. Industrialist Shantikumar Morarji has mentioned this in his biography. Bapuji’s disciple Miraben persuaded Bapu to watch the film.
Ramrajya was based on the story of Ramayana
Gandhi had seen the only Hindi film ‘Ram Rajya’ in his life. The film was released in 1943. During this, Mahatma Gandhi was talking about ‘Ram Rajya’ in India and director Vijay Bhatt influenced him and made the film ‘Ram Rajya’. In 1944, the film ‘Ram Rajya’ was chosen to feature Mahatma Gandhi. The film premiered in Juhu. Many producers hoped that this film would change their attitude towards films, but it did not happen. Mahatma Gandhi saw this film because it is the story of Ramayana.
The film ‘Ram Rajya’ was based on the story of Ramayana. Actors Prem Adeeb and Shobhana Samarth played the roles of Lord Ram and Mother Sita. The film was the third highest grossing film of that year. Not only this, it was the first Indian film to be released in the US. Even Mahatma Gandhi liked this film.
