Deadline extension for Vadanere committee to study flood situation in Bhima basin

Vadner Committee on Bhima Floods: The Vadner Committee constituted to study the floods in the Bhima Valley and suggest measures has been expanded. The deadline of the committee has been extended by the state government till the end of this year.

The government had on June 1 last year reconstituted a committee constituted to study the floods in the Krishna and Bhima river basins and suggest measures. However, the committee was reconstituted under the leadership of Rajendra Pawar after the resignation of Nandkumar Vadnare, former Principal Secretary, Irrigation Department.

In 2019, the floods in Krishna Valley were attributed to heavy rains in a short period of time. An unprecedented situation had arisen in Kolhapur and Sangli districts. A lot of property and agricultural land was damaged during the floods. Also there was a lot of damage to life and property. Many animals were also washed away. Therefore, this committee was constituted to suggest measures which would help in avoiding such situation in Bhima Valley.

Report submitted for Krishna basin

On Tuesday, the government passed an order extending the deadline for the committee to study, suggest measures and submit a report. The committee has already submitted its report for the Krishna basin, following which the panel chief Vadnere resigned citing personal reasons. In the order issued by the government, it has been said that Rajendra Pawar, who became the head of the panel, had demanded the extension.

However, the government has said that this will be the time limit. Earlier this deadline was 31 May, but later it was extended to 30 September. The Bhima Basin covers the entire Pune district and parts of Satara, Ahmednagar, Sangli and Solapur districts.

Finding out the causes of floods in Bhima and Krishna basins, do Almatti and other dams in Karnataka cause floods in the state? Also, the committee will have to submit a report in such a way that it can suggest measures to prevent such floods in future. Meanwhile, the committee is in the final stages of making recommendations by combining both the reports. After that, the final report with the approval of all the members has to be submitted to the state government.
