Washington. A new virus like S-CoV-2 found in bats in Russia is capable of infecting humans and the anti-corona vaccine given against Kovid-19 had no effect on it. This was revealed in a study. A team of researchers at Washington State University (WSU) found that the bat virus Khost-2 contains spike proteins that can infect human cells and blood serum from people who have been vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2. . They are resistant to both methods and antibody therapy.

Any virus uses spike proteins to enter and infect human cells. Both Khost-2 and SARS-CoV-2 belong to a sub-category of coronaviruses called Sarbecovirus. “Our research also shows that cerbecoviruses found in wildlife outside Asia are a threat to global health and the ongoing vaccination campaign against SARS-CoV-2,” said study author Michael Letko. Similar situation has also been observed in places like western Russia where Khosta-2 has been found.

The study, published in the journal PLOS Pathogens, also underscores the need to develop universal vaccines that provide protection against cerebacovirus in general, rather than only known forms of SARS-CoV-2. “At the moment, some groups are trying to develop a vaccine that not only protects against the new form of S-2, but actually protects us from cerebacovirus in general,” Letko said. “Unfortunately, many of our current vaccines are tailored to specific viruses that we know infect human cells that we are most at risk of becoming infected with,” he said.
