Blinken: US announces aid to Ukraine, $2 billion in military aid to 18 neighboring countries

Kyiv:US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken made an unannounced visit to Kyiv on Thursday and announced $2 billion in new military aid for other European countries facing challenges from Ukraine and Russia.

Blinken said in a meeting with senior Ukrainian officials that the Biden administration would provide $2 billion in long-term foreign military funding to Ukraine and its 18 neighboring countries, which “are likely to be at risk of future Russian aggression.” These neighboring countries of Ukraine include NATO member states and regional security partners.

This is in addition to an additional $675 million military aid package for Ukraine alone announced Thursday by US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin during a conference in Germany. That package includes howitzers, artillery weapons, military vehicles, armored ambulances, anti-tank systems and other weapons and equipment.

“The war is in another critical phase,” Austin said, and Ukrainian forces have begun their counterattacks in the south of the country. “We are now seeing the clear success of our shared efforts on the battlefield,” he said.

The meeting of the Ukraine Defense Liaison Group was attended by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and the Defense Minister of Ukraine as well as officials from allied countries.
