Battlefield Campaign in the Works at EA, Headlined by New Studio Ridgeline Games

Battlefield is going back to a story campaign. EA has formed Ridgeline Games, a new studio dedicated to the Battlefield franchise, which will focus on creating a proper campaign mode – an element that has been lacking in recent entries. The studio is headed by Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto, who will lead a Seattle-based team made up of industry veterans. “We are all in the future of the battlefield!” EA said on Twitter that it remains firm about the new experience and release window.

“It’s a great honor to have the opportunity to collaborate with DICE and Ripple Effect and lead the way in expanding the storytelling and character development story opportunities in the Battlefield series,” said Lehto, game director and chief prepared in a statement. While Ridgeline Games focuses on the narrative aspect, EA has fully outsourced development of the multiplayer end to DICE, a long-time partner they have worked with since 2006.

With the new Battlefield 2042 completely removing it from the game, Battlefield’s campaign section hasn’t gotten the proper treatment for a while. To top it off, the title was not well received by fans and critics alike due to numerous glitches, rendering issues, and underutilization of map sections. EA has cut development costs on many iconic aspects such as destructible environments, not bothering to iron out bugs before launch. Even the World War-themed entries – Battlefield 1 and Battlefield V – featured half-baked stories that functioned more as tutorials than actual campaigns.

EA first talked about creating a new campaign focused team for Battlefield, completely overhauling their management a few weeks after 2042’s launch, a result of negative reception. At the time, Vince Zampella, CEO, Respawn Entertainment – known for Titanfall and Apex Legends – was in charge of the series. The studio confirmed that it plans to create a “connected Battlefield universe” exploring new experiences and stories.

“In this universe, worlds are interconnected with shared characters and stories. This universe is also created by our community while harnessing the power of portals. [Battlefield’s in-built map customisation tool] and user-generated content that puts creativity in the hands of our players,” said Zampella GameSpot,

In addition to the Ridgeline Games reveal, Dice confirmed that creative director Lars Gustavsson, who has worked on the franchise for 20 years, will be leaving. “I’ve dedicated a significant portion of my life to Battlefield, and I’m very proud to have shaped this franchise into what it is today,” he said. GameSpot“I think it’s time for something new.”
