At least 24 people were killed and several dozen missing after a boat carrying passengers capsized in Bangladesh on Sunday. North Panchgarh district administrator, Zahrul Islam, where the accident took place, said rescue operations were on for the missing. Meanwhile, local police officer Shafiqul Islam told AFP news agency that 24 deaths have been confirmed so far, mostly women and children. Police told AFP that the name was filled with 50 Hindu pilgrims.

“So far bodies of 12 women, eight children and four men have been recovered,” Panchgarh district superintendent of police SM Sirajul Hooda told Xinhua. The police officer said that the rescue operation is on. It is believed that the name has been changed due to overloading. In Bangladesh, a country with an extensive network of inland waterways, hundreds of people die in boating accidents every year due to safety standards, yet it is not taken seriously. In the month of May this year, at least 26 people died when a boat sank in the Padma river.
