All shop owners have also been given time till September 30 to bold the signboard of their shop in english. So when the matter went to the Supreme Court, from Monday (October 3) the Mumbai Municipal Corporation is preparing to take action against those shop owners who do not have english signboards in bold letters.
The nameplates of shops and establishments should be written in Devanagari script initially in english language. Also if the name is to be written in any other language then the name in english should be in capital and bold letters than in that language, the decision of the government was issued on 17 March 2022. After that the Mumbai Municipal Corporation issued a circular and gave a lot of time to the shop owners for this. However, the trade association Federation of Retail Traders Welfare Association has moved the Supreme Court against this decision.
How will action be taken by BMC?
In the first phase, after inspecting the shops, shopkeepers and establishments will be directed to make english nameplate mandatory.
Action will be taken under the Shops and Establishment Act for disobeying the order of the Municipal Corporation.
For this, 75 teams of Shops and Establishments Department of Mumbai will be present to take action in various areas.
If the nameplate is not in english, penal action will be taken under the Municipal Corporation Act.
If the name plate is not changed even after the notice, then penal action will be taken through the court.
50 percent shop marks out of 4.5 lakhs are in english
Even though the action is taking place since Monday and the Mumbai Municipal Corporation has given shops thrice a deadline to make english signboards, 50 per cent of the 4.5 lakh shops in Mumbai have made their signboards in english in bold letters. according to the rules. Since other shop owners still do not put up boards in english, these shops will be on the radar of Mumbai Municipal Corporation for action. Signboards of all shops in Mumbai area should be in english in bold letters and action will be taken against those who do not live in english even after giving thrice the time limit. On the other hand, some trade associations have gone to the Supreme Court raising their voice against this and are trying to stop this action.
