White-nose syndrome is responsible for up to 90 percent decline in tricolor bat population
Traverse City: US federal officials on Tuesday announced plans to list the tricolor bat as an endangered species. It is the second bat species to be listed as endangered in the US due to a rapidly spreading fungal infection among bats. The US Fish and Wildlife Service recommended that the long-eared bat be removed from the endangered species list and placed on the endangered species list, as the species was on the verge of extinction.
Long-eared bats and tricolor bats are among a dozen species in North America suffering from white-nose syndrome. This disease affects the cold-dormancy (winter hibernation) of these breeds, which is very important for their survival. “White-nose syndrome is wiping out other species, including the tricolor bat, at an unprecedented rate,” said Martha Williams, director of the Fish and Wildlife Service.

According to the US administration, bats contribute $3 billion annually to the US agricultural economy through pest control and crop pollination. White-nose syndrome was first reported in New York State in 2006, and has since caused a 90 percent decline in the tricolor bat population.
