It is a battle won by the American administration in the economic war which opposes it to Moscow. In the future, no Turkish bank will accept MIR bank cards, this system set up by Russia after the annexation of Crimea in 2014 to circumvent Western sanctions and allow its citizens to have a means of payment and withdrawal abroad.

However, at the beginning of August, after the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Sochi, Russia, Ankara announced that it would expand the use of MIR cards. Five Turkish banks had so far integrated the system: the private establishments DenizBank and Isbank as well as the public banks Halkbank, Ziraat and VakıfBank – TEB, the local subsidiary of BNP Paribas, had not adopted it.
