Aadhaar card holders will be encouraged by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to voluntarily update their biometric data every ten years. According to a report, officials have said that the government agency will push people to update their facial and fingerprint scans linked to their Aadhaar cards. People above 70 years of age will be exempted from the notification. Currently, children aged five to 15 years are required to update their biometrics. Aadhaar enrollment of children below five years of age is done based on the child’s facial image and biometric authentication of the parent or guardian.
Citing official sources, PTI reported that the UIDAI will encourage people to voluntarily update their biometrics and demographic data once in 10 years. This will encourage people to update Aadhaar over time. Aadhaar card holders above 70 years of age will not be notified by the government body.
Aadhaar custodian UIDAI has enrolled almost all adults in India, with the exception of a small percentage in Meghalaya, Nagaland and Ladakh. Due to the NRC (National Register of Citizens) issue, Aadhaar enrollment started late in Meghalaya, while remote areas in Nagaland and Ladakh are yet to be covered, according to the report.
The Aadhaar saturation level among adult residents is now universal and the overall saturation level is 93.65 percent, the official told PTI. According to the report, total new registrations in August were only 24.2 lakh.
Currently, biometrics are not collected for Aadhaar registration of children up to five years of age. Instead, UIDAI registers children using facial scans and biometric authentication of parents or guardians. However, children aged between 5 and 15 years are required to submit their biometrics at the Aadhaar Seva Kendra.
