The teaser of The Last of You TV series is out now. HBO teased a brief glimpse of its upcoming video game adaptation in a sizzle reel highlighting the new show coming to its HBO Max streaming platform. It’s been more than two years since HBO announced a live-action project based on Naughty Dog’s critically-acclaimed title, starring Pedro Pascal and Bela Ramsay. Game director Neil Druckmann revealed a first-look image from the show earlier this year as part of Summer Game Fest. The Last of Us TV series is slated to release in 2023.
The Last of Us teaser opens with Joel (Pascal) and Ellie (Ramsey) crossing an icy bridge in the middle of winter — a later point in the video game. It cuts to some quick shots of the unlikely pair learning to survive in a post-apocalyptic world, as Joel takes on a father figure and teaches Ellie to hold and shoot a gun. “Everybody I care about has either died or left me,” Ramsey says, as we see Joel taking his daughter Sarah (Nico Parker) to the paramedics 20 years ago — spoiler alert — before being shot.
“You have no idea what loss is,” Pascal’s Joel utters in a deadbeat tone, as he struggles to find morality and a sense of human connection in a dangerous post-epidemic world. Nick Offerman’s ( Parks and Recreation ) Bill also appears in The Last of You teaser, taking off his hazmat mask and revealing his scruffy exterior. For the uninitiated, Bill maintains an uneasy alliance with the two main characters in The Last of Us. There’s also a short shot of some infected spore growth on a wall.
The Last of Us also stars Anna Torve (Mindhunter) as Tess, Murray Bartlett as Frank, Gabriel Luna as Tony, Merle Dandridge as Perry, and Jeffrey Pearce as Perry. Original voice actors Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson are also set to appear on the HBO show.
Based on the 2013 action-adventure video game, The Last of Us is set in a post-apocalyptic United States, as survivors fight their way through a zombie virus outbreak. The plot revolves around Joel, who is depressed after losing his daughter and takes up the art of smuggling. After being tasked with smuggling Ellie, a teenage girl, he crosses paths with numerous characters and fatal incidents and eventually becomes a father figure to her.
The Last of Us TV series teaser was just a small part of the HBO Max sizzle reel. Other notable features include the newly-released House of the Dragon, the prequel to Game of Thrones — now streaming on Disney+ Hotstar every Monday at 6:30 am. There are also brief shots from the upcoming Sam Levinson series The Idol, starring The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp. Levinson is most commonly known for creating and directing Euphoria.
The Last of Us TV series will be released on HBO Max sometime in 2023. If HBO’s deal with Disney Star still holds, The Last of Us will air on Disney+ Hotstar in India.
