Tata Group in talks with Wistron to manufacture iPhone in India: Report

Tata is reportedly in touch with Taiwanese supplier Wistron to set up a joint electronics manufacturing venture in India with the aim of manufacturing iPhones in the country. Tata reportedly seeks to tap Wistron’s expertise in product development, supply chain and assembly. If the deal goes through, Tata will become the first Indian company to manufacture the iPhone. Currently, these handsets are assembled by industry giants such as Wistron and Foxconn in China and India. The deal is expected to increase Wistron’s iPhone building capacity in India by five times its current production.

According to Bloomberg Report, Tata may acquire some equity in Wistron’s Indian operations. Firms can jointly build a new manufacturing plant. Rumors suggest that they may take both measures together.

It is believed that Tata could gain a share of Wistron’s manufacturing business beyond smartphones. Tata has already entered the smartphone supply chain as it manufactures iPhone chassis components in South India.

Apple is trying to increase production in India with the newly launched iPhone 14 series.

Tata’s tie-up with Wistron could encourage other global electronics brands to consider India for sourcing their equipment and reduce their dependence on China.
