Supreme Court will hear the oldest 300 cases from October, the oldest case till 1979

Out of these 300 cases, one case is from 1979. Between 1990 and 2000, about 24 cases have been reported.

According to the instructions issued by the Supreme Court Registry, the hearing of 300 old pending cases in the Supreme Court will be held from October 11. A PIL filed in 1985 is also involved in an ongoing case in the Supreme Court. Environmental activist and lawyer Ed. MC Mehta had filed this petition in 1985. Since the petitions have been pending in the Supreme Court for many years, they have become infructuous or have lost their relevance. Some petitions were filed seeking urgent hearing. However, even these petitions have proved fruitless. Therefore, it is estimated that these pending 300 petitions can be disposed of immediately.

According to the information available on the website of the Supreme Court, as on September 1, 2022, 70,310 cases are pending in the Supreme Court. Some of these cases are pending for more than two decades.

Chief Justice Uday Lalit has insisted on hearing of old cases after taking over. Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning proceedings are hearing decades-old cases. Therefore, new cases are being heard in the afternoon session.

Chief Justice Uday Lalit has constituted five separate constitution benches to dispose of 493 old cases pending before the constitution bench. Of these, 343 cases are pending before a five-judge constitution bench and 15 before a seven-judge constitution bench. Therefore, 135 cases are being heard before the nine-member Constitution Bench.
