Supreme Court likely to delay elections in local bodies, hearing postponed in Supreme Court

Mumbai : There is a possibility that the hearing of the Supreme Court regarding the elections to be held in the local body (polls) may be delayed. Because today the expected hearing regarding the election could not be held. Hence, there is a possibility of delay in the election.

Supreme Court has given green signal to OBC reservation in local body elections. However, it is not yet clear whether this OBC reservation will be applicable in 92 city councils. Because after the dismissal of the Supreme Court, the state government has once again filed a review petition. Also, what will happen to the rules that the Shinde government changed regarding the ward structure during the Mahavika Aghadi government? There is no clarity on this. The Supreme Court will take time to decide on the direct election of the mayor. Therefore, the hearing in which these three questions will be answered today is expected to be held today. But that hearing has not taken place today, so there is a possibility of delay in this matter as well.

In the month of May, when the Supreme Court was hearing about local self-government elections, the Supreme Court had expressed concern by questioning why the local self-government body elections in Maharashtra were getting delayed. The Supreme Court had also ordered that elections should be held during the rainy season. But even after the matter is in the list today, the hearing is not taking place. In such a situation, there is a possibility of further delay in the election process. The term of Zilla Parishads and Panchayat Samitis was over. Administrators were appointed and their administration was entrusted to them. Due to the delay in elections, the tenure of the administrators will have to be extended.
