A beautiful baby growing up. Station F was inaugurated five years ago by Emmanuel Macron, after pharaonic works, in the Halle Freyssinet, near the Gare d’Austerlitz. Covering 34,000 m2, the incubator has swapped the freight wagons it previously housed for the young population of promising start-ups. A change of era for a place that has contributed to changing the dimension of French tech on the world stage.
Born in the head of Xavier Niel, the boss of Free, and financed with 250 million euros from his pocket, Station F has since been directed by Roxanne Varza, supported by Marwan Elfitesse. The concept, which brings together around thirty support programs for start-ups, is not intended to be a tool for profitability. Its operating costs are covered and the place hosts, in particular, events. A full-fledged activity. Its track record is spotless, with 5,000 start-ups supported in five years, 41% of which were founded or co-founded by women. A significant figure in a sector which is criticized for its lack of parity.
An inspiring place
Start-ups dream of growing and investors are on the lookout for Station F. Sold as the largest start-up campus in the world, it inspires abroad. Similar “iconic” campus projects on entrepreneurship have also been born in Colombia, Tunisia, Senegal and Japan. Ukraine also has one, which plans to eventually accommodate 30,000 people on 1 million square meters. A true city within a city, UNIT.City is 35% built. The place shelters, despite the war, nearly 2,500 people every day.
